All About Microdermabrasion and Exfoliation

What is Microdermabrasion and Who is it For?

Diamond Tip Microdermabrasion is one of the most popular skin care treatments on the market. This painless skin care technology combines the use of mechanical exfoliation with simultaneous suction in the form of a single metal wand. Think of this wand like a finger-trap sized vacuum, because that's about what it looks like. The outer rim of the "trap" allows for detachable abrasive diamond tips in different sizes and shapes, and the inside of the "trap" is a vacuum that sucks up the dead skin cells scraped off by the diamond tip. The back end of the wand connects to a hose where dead skin cells are pulled through and trapped by the filter so the machine can continue it's suction. Microdermabrasion is used to create a quick glow as it reveals fresh skin, to stimulate collagen production and assist in anti-aging regimes, and to help unclog congested skin and allow for easier extraction of blackheads and clogged pores. When upgrading a facial to a microdermabrasion, the exfoliation step of a facial will be substituted with the microderm machine, so the service would still include all the serums, treatments, masks, and moisturizers.

Exfoliation is needed for getting rid of dead skin cells on the surface layer of your skin. The skin naturally exfoliates in a 28 day cycle that drastically slows down as we get older. Microdermabrasion is an advanced exfoliation method used to counteract this slowing cycle and encourage the production of new skin cells. This is imperative in the treatment of fine lines, sun damage, and age spots because each time the outer layer of dead skin cells is removed, your body must replace it. To do this, the bottom layer is stimulated to create new skin cells, but collagen and elastin are stimulated as well. These proteins are the strength and structure your skin needs to stay firm and not sag or wrinkle, so they are the key to anti-aging. For at least 7-10 days after you microdermabrasion, serums and moisturizers will penetrate deeper and be much more effective than they normally ever would, and that's a huge advantage some people tend to forget about. So make sure you use quality products with good ingredients after your service!

Microdermabrasion can also be an extremely effective tool in combating certain types of acne. Removing dead skin cells instantly allows for a much more successful removal of blackheads and clogged pores. It also allows for acne treatments to get in and do their job on another level.
Typical treatments are recommended at 6-12 sessions with 2-4 week intervals. Immediate benefits include instant glow and improved texture, but consistent treatments and a corrected at-home regimen will most often result in more even skin tone, diminished fine lines, clearer skin and pores, reduction in superficial scarring and discoloration, and enhanced penetration of quality products and at-home skin care.
